Why I Joined RECPA: I learned about RECPTA at a school fair
Job: City Planner with Office of Economic Development

I grew up in Detroit, in an older neighborhood of 1920s bungalows/duplexes with local businesses in walking distance. I have a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State and a Master’s in City Planning from Georgia Tech. My first job after Tech was at the City of Houston where I met my husband Scott, also a planner at the time. He decided to go to UT Law School so we spent three years in Austin and after graduating he was offered a job in Dallas. He’s a Duncanville native so it was easy to return to DFW.  We were introduced to Winnetka Heights by his mom, by way of Diane Sherman through realtor circles. For me, I felt the authenticity of the place and being from Detroit didn’t mind a little grit – Oak Cliff has changed a lot since 2002!

RECPTA is a big part of the sense of community here, whether it’s bringing a meal to an appreciative new mom or chatting with ladies you know in the produce section of Tom Thumb. I’m glad that my kids are growing up experiencing the spirit of community.

When I’m not busy with daily life and the latest round of home renovations, I credit regular yoga classes for my survival and like to cook/bake and scrapbook.

I’m looking forward to being the alumni liaison for a second year as I think momentum was built last year in re-engaging alumni, and I hope to encourage strong participation in alumni gatherings and other RECPTA events this year. It’s great to maintain connections and perhaps another alum will be motivated to grab the torch for next year!
