Why I joined RECPTA: I joined RECPTA out of a burning desire/desperation to figure out this mom thing. Still working on it!
Our neighborhood: Winnetka Heights
Kids school(s): Violet goes to Seed Preschool
Other job: Photojournalist and law firm administrator (it’s complicated)

I grew up in Rockville, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC. I went to college at Emory University in Atlanta and then returned to the DC area to try to do some good in government and the non-profit world. I worked in the Clinton White House and then went overseas to Morocco and France where I got bit by the photography bug. After a long, circuitous journey, I ended up in Dallas in 2007 working as a photojournalist at The Dallas Morning News and then back to DC to be one of President Obama’s official photographers.

After Jon and I were married in December 2012 in Washington, I returned to Dallas to get on with baby-making and family-starting. Well, to be truthful, we started baby-making before I moved back. And, as I side note, I don’t recommend changing jobs, moving across country, buying/building a home while pregnant! When it rains, it pours! And we are grateful for the blessings!

We were desperately house-hunting before Violet’s arrival and ended up stumbling upon our home on North Montclair in Winnetka Heights. Throughout my life, in all the places I had lived, I had never felt a true sense of community, and I was in hot pursuit of this ideal for my growing family. I had a strong sense that North Oak Cliff would deliver in this regard and RECPTA has been a big part of that.

Humans are social creatures, and we need connection to thrive, especially in times of stress. When Violet was born, I felt the stress of new motherhood, a new marriage, and feeling like I Ieft my career in the dust. The connections I made through RECPTA and my community, from the casual conversations on the playground, to the deeper friendships forged, have made life better and more fulfilling for me and my family. For this, I’m grateful.

When I’m not bragging on RECPTA and North Oak Cliff, I work with my husband at our small law firm, JB Schwartz PLLC, take photos of my kids, drink a lot of coffee, and aspire to exercise more frequently.

This year as VP of Membership, I aspire to create a cookbook with your help! Stay tuned!
